OUR FUTURE IS IN OUR PORT!

On Friday, December 6th, at 6PM, Free Trieste presents its next demonstration during a press conference in its piazza della Borsa 7 conference room (1st floor).

Trieste has always been the main port for the States of Mitteleuropa, and if has the deepest seabeds in the Adriatic. Furthermore, most of the freight from Asia flows through the Suez Canal reaching Rotterdam (3879 nautical miles); reaching Trieste instead (1751 nautical miles) would save about 5 days of navigation.

The international Free Port of Trieste must be the beating heart of the Free Territory of Trieste, of its economy, and of its hinterland. Its reactivation would provide jobs and wellbeing for all.

The international Free Port of Trieste.

Currently, the Southern Free Port (s.c. “porto nuovo” or “new port”) mostly serves to handle TEUs, but Trieste has an even greater potential. Thanks to its free zones, Trieste can become an emporium, a financial center, process raw materials, open shipyards.

However, to develop this potential, it is fundamental defending the international Free Port.

In particular, it is important preserving its areas, starting from the northern sector (the one local politicians call “porto vecchio” as in “old port” because to them old = useless).

Free Trieste is defending the Northern Free Port since 2012 because the local political establishment wants to illegally dismiss it. This would deprive not only Trieste, but the whole international community of States of a unique chance of economic development.

Trieste must chose: in 2013 alone, more than 60 medium businesses filed for bankrupt. This equals to the loss of more than 6,000 jobs per year. Furthermore, every year, more than 4,000 people emigrate, leaving Trieste behind.

The choice is: either do nothing, or change Trieste’s future.

Many citizens are becoming aware of Trieste’s unique, clear legal framework. This legislation can – and must – be the solid foundation for a new course. To walk towards Trieste’s best future, it is vital reactivating the rights of the Free Territory of Trieste and its unique international Free Port.

The free zones that local politicians call useless (!) and even harmful (?) are actually instruments that many States use to create new jobs and wealth. Quickly and effectively. Trieste has unique free zones since 1947!

In facts, the Free Territory’s independence is recognized by many fellow States (1947 Italian Peace Treaty, art. 21). And unlike other free zones, Trieste’s free zones are permanent: they cannot be suspended or moved away, they can only be extended (Annex VIII, art. 3.4).

Complying with those laws in force is not a choice, it is an obligation, especially for Trieste’s administering Italian Government.

We are in a fundamental time of Trieste’s history: it is time to chose our future following the path of legality.
