Trieste, 2 April 2014. – Recently, in Italy many supporters of Veneto’s independence were arrested: this situation causes, once again, a credibility problem for Italian politics, in which it is always hard telling how genuine both the actions of certain extremists and the seriousness of the crimes they are charged with are.

In post-WWII Italian history, from Southern Tyrol to Sicily, there are abundant cases of extremist groups created or incited by agent provocateurs to cause distress at will, and so are cases of citizens charged with subversion without legal ground, be them pro-autonomy, right wing or left wing activists.

The Free Trieste Movement was itself subject to such provocations in the part months, despite it having nothing to do with the Italian and European separatist groups since its works revolves on the international legal status of Trieste and of its international Free Port, both consolidated with the 1947 Treaty of Peace and both violated by the Italian Government, to which Trieste is entrusted since 1954 under a special trusteeship mandate of temporary civil administration.

Also, it raises concern that, since 2007, the Italian authorities allow and officially accredit in Trieste an operational, federation of revanchist and nationalistic movements that range from the Baltic to the Black Sea.

This is why the Free Trieste Movement invites both the Italian movements standing for autonomy or independence and the bodies of the Italian Republic to avoid extremism and provocations, which are of no use for anyone, and most certainly harmful for all.
