Trieste, 4 May 2016. – The Free Trieste Movement is the biggest and most followed on line among local political organizations, but it does not run for Italian elections. On May 5th, at 11.30AM, the Movement is hosting a press conference in its piazza della Borsa 7 office to officialize and to explain its own strategy to invalidate the local elections. The elections are taking place on 5 June in the Municipalities of Trieste and Muggia.

According to Free Trieste, the citizens must reject the whole Italian political-electoral system by refusing to vote for it. Then they should request that the Municipalities be placed under compulsory administration until the summoning of legitimate elections, in compliance with the Free Territory of Trieste’s own legal system. A system that, for instance, includes proportional representation.

This is why the Movement declares June 5 the “NO ELECTION DAY” and it has prepared two forms: one is a “declaration of abstention with reasons” to be lodged at polling stations, the other is a request for compulsory administration, which is to be presented to the Commissioner of the Government, the officer in charge of the present-day Free Territory’s own temporary civil administration.

The initiative voices popular protest and it is a matter of concern for all political parties, because in the past elections, Free Trieste’s “anti-system” campaign achieved more than 2000 declarations lodged at the polling stations, supported with a high abstentions rate.
